Charmaine Sheh 2 nominations in same category to compete for "My Favourite Female Character"

It is obvious that Charmaine Sheh's momentum is significantly less than "4th Mistress" Sheren Tang, but yesterday at the <TVB Anniversary Awards> nomination list, besides competing for TV Queen, Charmaine is also nominated for both of her roles in <Beyond> (Lau Sam Ho) and <You're Hired> (Lam Miu Miu) for the "My Favorite Female Character Award". This makes Charmaine the only artist who was nominated twice in the same award category, two nominations competing for one award. It is no wonder the public is spreading rumors that TVB especially arranged this to make way for Sheren to get TV Queen, while Charmaine gets the other award.

There is huge competition for this year's "My Favorite Female Character Award". Charmaine said: "Having two nominations, I'm afraid that the votes will contradict. Honestly speaking, I really like both roles." It's rumored that TVB carefully laid this out? "I don't know. But I feel however TVB lays it out, I will still try my best." Do you have confidence for the TV Queen award? "This year the competitors are strong, I have never thought about it." Who is the the strongest? "Every nominated artist is very strong, especially Sheren, Anita Yuen and Tavia Yeung." Speaking of the past rumors with Chilam Cheung, when she sees Anita Yuen, does she feel awkward? Charmaine hopes that she doesn't get pulled into the water again, they have never been awkward. In all her interviews, she has always said there is no problem, hope there is a chance for a collaboration.

Due to the excellent ratings for "You're Hired" last week averaging 36 points, peaking at 40 points with finale ratings of 33 points, peaking at 38 points, Netizens requested TVB to gather the original cast to "You're Hired" for either a prequel or sequel. Producer Nelson Cheung expressed that if there will be a sequel, it will have to be decided by TVB. Dayo Wong and the rest of the cast also needs to agree to do a sequel first.

Towards the controversial issues on "You're Hired" ratings, ATV said that the ratings announced by TVB and the results by ATV CSM media research had different numbers. It was said that the ratings for "You're Hired" last week was only 31 points, Saturday's 2 hour finale broadcast was only 27 points. TVB explained that the ratings announced by them include the HD channel viewership.

Many Hong Kong Movie award winners have said when they become actors they become passionate. When their acting reaches an established level they recieve recognition. But when the market is bad, they can only wait for luck. Charmaine Sheh is a Miss Hong Kong 2nd Runner up and also an actress. In TVB's 2006 Anniversary Award Ceremony she was awarded a double and recieved the TV Queen title. Reaching the top of her career, she was still shooting TV series one after the other. The results are not disappointing either. When someone gets famous they also become a topic of discussion whether its about rumors, personality and not getting along with others.

She said "If you achieve alot you will also lose many things. There are advantages and disadvantages. The first thing is that you can maintain your popularity. But the disadvantage is that many of the things being said are untrue. It is quite confusing. You either love it or hate it. I have no control over it, so let it be. If I haven't been in the news lately then thats okay, If you're discussing about me then say what you like. I cannot do anything about it".

Charmaine has been in the industry for 12 years. Society and technology has also improved. She expressed that she has recently injured her lower back. As a reporter, I was afraid that extreme discussions may increase her movement and affect her back pain.

Miss Hong Kong 1997 Charmaine Sheh has become a popular TVB Fa Dan to date. Currently TVB series "You're Hired has peaked ratings of 33 points. She has also completed the shooting for TVB Grand production "Beyond the Realm of Conscience" and taken a 1 month holiday. While taking time off she would be able to do things she didn't have time to do such as spending 3 hours for a magazine shoot, have dinner with friends she hasn't seen for a year, stay at home to watch TV and take a flight to Hawaii to visit her Mom etc. "I cannot totally rest because I have too many social gatherings with friends. Hong Kong is a small place, yet the Paparazzi's are too much. Especially during this century, don't you think there aren't any celebrities? Because of the way they are treated by the paparazzi's. How can there be any left?

The First step in becoming an actress

Charmaine made the first step to becoming an actress. "When they first asked me if I was interested in auditioning to become an actress, I didn't think about it and said [Of Course I will try]. Why did I want try? Actually I wanted to try a lot of new things. The Miss Hong Kong Pageant was over, yet I recieved an award. Would I need do charity work everyday? Even if I do, it would just be for 1 year. I was just feeling very curious and playful when I filmed my first few TV series. People said that my acting was poor but I had already given my best. I had limited knowledge of acting and no acting experience. That's why it was average, I needed to have more experience to gain the acting skills. I felt that maybe this industry wasn't right for me and that maybe I should change industries. I had these thoughts even though I already signed a 3 year artist contract with TVB. One year I would shoot 100 episodes of TV series. How would I have time to think about these things? I would just go home and sleep. When I hadn't yet finished shooting a series, I would need to shoot another one after. It was continuous. The company did not give up on me. They offered me many opportunties to play different roles, so that I was able to discover which type of role could make me shine".

My personality is not suitable for this industry. In the past I was very quiet. I never had the ability to perform. When I was studying they asked me to perform in a school play. I said No, will people laugh at me? Perhaps it was because I studied in a girls school, the best thing would be not to approach or look at me".

Do My Best

In "Flying Fox of Snowy Mountain" she played the role of Miu Yeuk Lan. She stated that she only had to act weak. But in "Return of the Cuckoo" Kwan Hou was just like being herself. While shooting "Country Spirit" she realised she was able to get into character as Sun Fung. "I am very lucky that all the series I had accepted to fim had good storylines. Especially [War and Beauty], I had a lot of fun. The scenes consisted mainly of inner emotions". She did her best to act in those scenes. While the paparazzi's were reporting which cast members didn't get along. "[War and Beauty] I don't remember much about that now. Do you have anything else to talk about? Why would you not get along with so many people? These things I have no control over and I will not care. I am already controlling things I have control over which is to portray my roles well. Also how to enjoy my time when I am filming and making others around me feel comfortable. I will not handle anything regarding TV ratings or any news reports".

High Definition

TVB have already entered the High Definition TV century. Charmaine says "Yes it's quite scary. There are advantages and disadvantages. The whole picture looks 3D and more clearer. It looks more beautiful but the lighting technician has a very important role in this. If you have pimples they will appear clearly on the screen. I don't really take care of that, but I will do facials. It's very important to have enough rest. But you will not have enough time to rest while filming

The gentlemen around Charmaine Sheh have always received the most media attention. No matter if they're just working on a series, in the same car or on the same table having dinner, these are always the 'root' of the rumors. Charmaine is referred to as the "Rumor Queen", the male artistes that she has been rumored with can be placed on a long list. In the past year, the press loved criticizing Charmaine for having many rumors, releasing too much 'electricity' and too whiny, but towards her acting performance, Charmaine's acting skills are well accepted by the audience. Among the Fadans of this generation, she is one of the actresses who is good with acting, putting on a good show.

In "Flying Fox of Snowy Mountain", Charmaine played Miu Yeuk Lan and was criticized to have a chicken voice, up until today's "You're Hired" playing the debt collector Lam Miu Miu opposite of Dayo Wong, Charmaine has experienced the complicated love-hate challenge after 12 years.

Enjoys acting in a new role officially
Charmaine said: "When I first accepted a script, I was curious. Until I was criticized of having a chicken voice, I wanted to give up. I asked brother Wah (Felix Wong) and several other seniors to  teach me how to change my acting. I didn't understand why my hard work would cause people to yell at me. Fortunately at the time I was really busy with my jobs, I filmed 100 episodes in one year, didn't even have time to rest. I didn't have time to stop and consider if I should give up or not, constantly pushing ahead. When I was unhappy or was not able to detach from the role, I would only drive home quickly after work and at most cry to myself. After letting all my tears out, the next day I would forget about it and continue doing my work. I went through 1 or 2 years of mood swings, but I greatly appreciate TVB not giving up on me, giving me many acting opportunities, allowing me to find my ideal path in acting.

"'Return of the Cuckoo' was my turning point. Audience was watching the king-hearted 'Kwan Ho' and felt that I was better. Actually this role is very close to my personality in reality. Because of the praises, my self-confidence went up, then later I went to Catherine Tsang and asked her about 'Country Spirit'. Because we were filming on actual scenery, each day I would be responsible for pulling a small boat across the river, I really felt that I turned into my character in the series "Shun Fung". Since I fell in love with acting, I maintained this heated feeling until today. Currently I enjoy accepting new roles and new challenges."

Fear to be given the "Rumor Queen" title
Charmaine fell in love with acting, at the same time is it hard for her to detach from loving her on screen partner? From all the series she's done, most of her rumors started from filming, rumors emerge from the beginning or broadcast until the end. She seriously has too many rumored boyfriends, so many that not even one table could seat them all. "Many of the rumors are randomly made up by the magazines. If those rumored boyfriend friends had dated me before, why would they all celebrate my birthday with me? I admit that I have more male artistes friends than females in the industry. Communicating less with females in the industry would help lessen the gossips about us, saying that we are fighting and jealous of each other. I like to be with my male friends, it's very comfortable to chat about work and personal matters. Towards the title "Rumor Queen", I feel fear, I am not vulnerable to attacks, but the media ecology is terrifying. The only thing I could do is just to hold it in and treat it as promotion."

With regards to keeping in contact with Kevin
While rumours about Charmaine Sheh and Benny Chan have been circulating for five years, over the past year rumours of her and Kevin Cheng have become increasingly intense. This can not simply be just "publicity". Charmaine will thoroughly explain just what her relationship with Kevin Cheng is.

"Before a couple start dating they would start to talk so that they may understand each other. When I have a date with a male friend, I am never evasive about it because this is a normal social interaction. I know that everyone firmly believes that Kevin and I are kind of dating, but in fact we are at the stage of keeping in contact with each other and have not begun dating. Apart from shooting "Beyond The Realm Of Conscience", where we got plenty of opportunities to see each other, we don't usually meet up. Our thoughts and direction in life are completely different; If two people argue more than having meals, how will they get on with each other in the future? I need to think it through before taking another step forward. At present I don't have any feeling towards dating because when we break up I'm afraid it will be hard to take. I'd rather be alone or maintain our friendship.

Still friends with Benny Chan

Benny Chan says that he will still wait for Charmaine.
"Waiting for what? He has never said before. Although he often says random things, I am still friends with him and at present we occasionally phone each other. If I were too choose to be with him then I would not have waited till now. He is not usually in Hong Kong and although we live in the same building, we have yet to bump into each other. (Could the reason for not choosing Benny Chan be due to his playboy-ish nature?) That is his business and I do not need to evaluate it."

Getting married and starting a family part of the plan
Benny Chan is now old news, and now Kevin Cheng is currently the one; What will the future hold? "I would also love to know what the future holds. A woman who has experienced marriage and giving birth would feel satisfied, that is also part of my life-long plan. The other day I was reminiscing about old times with Christine Au Yeung. She told me that she dated for 3 months before getting married and now she has a happy family. I am really envious of her, but then I thought, if I had the chance would I have the courage to take that step? That is a very serious question for me!"

Accompanies mom to be "lazy Sheh" [Translation by: aZnangel]

Charmaine will soon be going to Hawaii for her summer break! Reporters said that she just got back from a break in Hawaii before "You're Hired" and now after the promotions for "You're Hired" are over, she's taking another break? Compared to the past where she films nearly a 100 episodes per year, Charmaine smiled and said did she turn into a "lazy Sheh" ("lazy snake")?

"When summer comes, I always go spend time with my mom. I request that I take 1 or 2 month off per year because I have to leave some time for family. If it wasn't because in 2006 that my mom overcame a large surgery and a coma, I wouldn't have realized that I need to change my life. Maybe before I thought if there's work, there's no family. I remember when I received the news that my mom was in a coma and wasn't waking up, I was in Beijing for an award ceremony. At the time I was so worried and out of it, I was trying very hard to hold in my tears, but the tears came out through my nose. Fortunately my mom was fine, I blamed myself that I was not filial. This is when Roger Kwok shared his experienced me, he taught me to deal with my emotions and continue with work. After that incident, I did not let myself have regrets or do anything wrong. Being able to walk the streets with my mom, chat or have dinner, it is the most important to me.

Charmaine Sheh and Dayo Wong's collaboration in "You're Hired" is a mismatched. During filming, they would often both challenge each other almost constantly 24 hours a day. This made Charmaine really tired, yet very happy. She said that Dayo is a fast paced person, her reactions cannot be slow. During filming, both of them really were bickering against each other. There were three scenes which Charmaine especially commented on, which involved the two of them "smothering" each other, the audience should pay attention to it.

"There was one scene where Miu Miu (Charmaine) knew that Ah Song (Dayo) had a secret, she rushed back to the noodle shop to tell Mo Leen (Theresa Lee) about it, but Ah Song came intercepting. When we shot that scene, Dayo suddenly fell to the ground begging me, at the time I went numb and thought to myself 'oh my god you're using this trick!'. The scene was accomplished in one take."

"I also gave a 'surprise' to Dayo. Ah Song's appearance is very lazy, so I'm always smacking him. There was one time where we were sitting, he was being lazy again, so I could not help but take the toothpicks to whack him on the head. He was not able to dodge me fast enough, so he got a head shot. Afterwards, I told Dayo that I really wanted to beat him up."

"Dayo caused me to NG 20+ times, which that broke my record. Miu Miu and Ah Song were dating, but the shameless Ah Song was unwilling to pour out his deep feelings, so he was forced to talk about the 'deep feelings'. Turns out that the 'deep feelings' Ah Song wanted to pour out was about eating breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea..... this made Miu Miu very angry. During filming, Dayo and I could not hold in our laughter because it was just too silly!"

Charmaine Sheh and Skye Chan attended the "Hong Kong Lifestyle Showcase" cutting red ribbon ceremony. Charmaine expressed that since she entered the industry, she has not attended any book fairs or any large events because no matter how much she disguises herself, people can still recognize her. Asked if its because of her job that she even has to sacrifice her freedom to date? She said: "In a way yes. No matter if I date or spend time with family, there will never be two advantages at once. The most important is to have balance. I won't guarantee that I might meet someone that I really like one day and then get marry like lightening, but still I won't be able to get used to it completely."

It was said that Suki Tsui will be getting married in December, Charmaine expressed that she has collaborated with her before and if the news is true, she congratulates the couple.

Regarding the fans of Kevin Cheng and Wong He's verbal war which is going on in the discussion forums, Charmaine expressed that she does not know about it: "I didn't watch 'Burning Flames 3'. (Does Wong He always change the script?) I collaborated with Wong He once in a TVB telemovie and because we only had one scene together, I don't think he could change anything. (It's Kevin's first time starting rumors of not getting along and its with Wong He?) There is always a first everything. Spreading the rumor now is not considered late yet. (Among the two, who looks more like a firefighter?) It can't be judged, anyone that puts on the firefighter uniform will look like one. (Who do you like better?) I like Bosco more, he's tall."

***my take on it:
LOL that's what I think of all this. It's kinda funny (yet sad) how Charmaine can't go anywhere basically in HK without getting recognized. I guess that's the price that comes with doing a billion well-known, as well as well-loved tvb series. It must suck though, cause everytime she goes out she always has to throw on the mandatory baseball cap and shades- and STILL get hunted down by fans for autographs.

PS> wow what a great answer to the bombing of questions from reporters- "I like Bosco more, he's tall" hahaa, Charmaine sure knows how to work her way out of tight corners. Guess it comes with being in the industry for so long =)

warning: *contains spoilers for chapter 5 of "You're Hired"*

After watching chapter 5 today, my curiosity has been piqued with the entrance of Charmaine's (Lam Miu Miu's) ex-boyfriend "Tung Yut Boon" a homeless environment-loving, tree-hugging man who urges Betty to bring him cardboard whenever she sees any. Although seemingly just a hobo with crazy ideals on saving mother nature, Lam Miu Miu identifies her ex-boyfriend as an university graduate of environmental sciences. However, Lam Miu Miu refuses to discuss about her ex-boyfriend beyond this point and becomes distressed whenever his name is mentioned in the family. Her shopaholic disease also flares up a bit as she insists on purchasing ALL the make-up in the store once his name is mentioned by her curious sister in-law. Tung Yut Boon's character is quite an interesting intro because if Lam Miu Miu isn't lying about his university degree in environmental sciences, then why is her unmentionable ex-boyfriend sleeping under the bridge, (in a make-shift cardboard box) and handing out his "business cards" (made by crossing out the original name on the business card and handwriting his own name on the other side) to strangers that approach him?

At the end of chapter 5 Lam Miu Miu sees Mr. Mak talking to her ex-boyfriend and flips out once she hears his name. This comedy cannot possibly get better. Support "You're Hired!" by watching chapter 6- airing on Tuesday Aug 18th instead of Monday because of the Taiwan Typhoon Special.

warning: *the following contains spoilers for chapters 1, 2, 3 of You're Hired*

Dayo Wong: playing his typical role as the comedian on this series, Dayo opens the series with his scene as the seizing, disruptively contagious passenger who worms his way craftily into a first class upgrade. As his character develops as "Mr. Mak" (a name that he must be called after staying 30 mins more at any given hotel) the viewers still are puzzled as to whether or not "Mr. Mak" really is a classy and rich person. Yet this illusion is quickly shattered as he makes the hotel manager "Mimi" exchange 10$ american to Hk dollars for him. Furthermore, his attack on the waiter for giving him a "fossil" to eat helps him worm his way into a free breakfast to go.

However, beyond this comedic aspect of Mr. Mak, we see another layer (just like his character in "to catch the uncatchable") Mr. Mak turns out to be an mba entrepreneur genius TJ Mak- who mysteriously disappeared from the business world a year ago. His impressive bio leaves the audience wondering why exactly he lives so frivolously when he is the master at money-making. As the story develops there is a hint to the fact that he really did kill his business partner Martin (as accused by the mother of Martin in her alzeirmer rants)

Charmaine Sheh: enters the scene in a gorgeous white gown and splattered with designer accessories. Her classy appearance is quickly squandered by her business card as "debt collector" but  her witty flexibility is seen with the way she handles the situation at the pool party where she saves the debt-ridden man Mr Chong with the facade of the girl collecting money for the children in mainland China. Later on as the story progresses, we see that Lam Miu Miu (alot of water) is actually the daughter of a noodle-maker and her appearance of designer glamour is created by blowing her credit card limit month after month. As a shopaholic, Charmaine stops at nothing to keep her style in check as displayed by her constant change of appearances scene after scene.

Yet looking past her profession as a debt collector, one sees the soft nature of Charmaine when she refuses to collect the money from Yue Mong Leen after seeing her tell her son that they don't have money for him to go to preschool. Although a debt collector that stops at nothing to collect from Dayo Wong, their chemistry is exciting and new as Dayo keeps blowing Charmaine's fuse with his insane antics.

One of the better series of the year, this comedy is definitely worth following- not only for Dayo's hilarious acting but also for Charmaine's character as the money-hoarding yet kindly debt collecting "ah jeh". =)

Series Producer Nelson Cheung has revealed:

"I collaborated with Charmaine Sheh many times. This time Ah Sheh really did well because for the role she made herself into another Charmaine Sheh. Her role is fun to play with, she's like a hot HK girl , an tough collection agent. She is even nicknamed the debt collector girl in the company. Ah Sheh went out with no burden to collaborate with Dayo Wong and did very well in saying her tough debt collector's words. In the series, Ah Sheh is very pretty, having many pretty clothes and accessories. However, in the series Charmaine always has a headache with her costume. We can all look at Dayo's costume, it is very simple. The main outfit consist of a T-shirt, red-black checker shirt and a jacket that looks like garbage material. That is his main costume throughout the series, so this shirt was probably used for 5 or 6 outfits throughout. This is Dayo's focus because he is lazy when it comes to clothing for the series!"
